UPDATE: We hear that Governor Brown likes faxes as a gauge of support: (916) 558-3160
If you haven’t contacted Governor Brown about signing SB 910, please do so soon. The bill, which has been passed by both the State Senate and Assembly will require motorists to give bicyclists at least three feet of passing distance. It will also allow motorists to legally cross a double yellow line to do so (when clear and safe to do so), and sets a minimum fine for injuring a bicyclist via an unsafe pass.
More info is available at CalBike‘s Give Me Three campaign site. They expect the Governor to make a decision on the bill in the next week or so (he has until the first week of October to sign it until law). They also provide guidance on how to contact the Governor in writing:
1) Download a sample letter of support (Word doc) and modify it by replacing the text in brackets (<>) with today’s date and your name and mailing address. If you’ve been buzzed or hit by a passing driver, briefly describe the incident to help the Governor more clearly understand why this law is needed.
2) You have two options for sending your message:
– Email us your message and we’ll deliver it to the Governor’s office. This link opens a ready-to-send email message. You’ll see a space for adding your own personal message.
– Fax it to the Governor’s office at 916-558-3177 or mail it to the address on the sample letter. (text from http://calbike.org/advocacy-2/safe-passing/)
