Just a quick update on the Spring Street and First Street bike lanes. This past weekend, City crews put down preliminary markings and striping on First and Spring Street. You can find further coverage over at the L.A. Eco Village Blog here. Tonight, City crews are expected to begin installing new pavement markings for the new street configuration on Spring. Colorization is expected to occur this weekend with Spring going green from 9th to Cesar Chavez, while First St. will receive colorization exclusively at conflict zones. The Department has already ordered the colorization materials, and we are expecting for them to arrive later this week. Barring inclement weather, it is our intention to have striping and respective colorization complete by this coming weekend. Check out our flickr stream for some more photos of the preliminary markings on Spring St. in the Civic Center area (near City Hall and LAPD Headquarters). We’ll continue to update you on the blog as the project progresses.
Please tell me that the green plastic coating will hold up for years. I dont totally see the point of coating the pavement with green – seems like added expense – but if you do I hope it lasts and doesnt become slippery in 2 years when the city is even more broke and can’t fix anything.
Cool can’t wait!
Spring Street is a step forward for the City of Los Angeles that bicycling is a true transportation option. I’m hopeful motorist will start respecting bicyclists on the street by seeing more and more bicycle facilities’ on the road. Then recognize bicyclists have the same right to be on the road as cars.
It’s good the City of Los Angeles is raising the bar in pursuing every option for bicyclists.
I will get a chance to ride on it, the next BPIT meeting.
A unprotected, buffered green bike lane can cause hazardess or uncomfortable conditions for bicycling if vehicles are allowed to park or drive in it routinely. What designs are going to be implemented to discourage drivers from encroaching on that space?
Very exciting pictures….until I was reminded that the bike lane means a bus only lane is being removed. Sort of a WTF decision.

Please post some more scanned blue prints. I don’t think I have seen any tech. drawings of the Spring st. facilities . Have you settled on design for lanes on 7th downtown? If so, please share.

in response to JJJ, wasn’t the Spring St bus only lane always a “bikes ok” lane too?
Yes, I believe that it was.
