Our friends at C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change Thru LIVE Exchange) are throwing an awesome event this Sunday, August 19th, 2012 out in Santa Monica. They have joined forces with the Santa Monica Museum of Art (SMMoA) for a day of creative art, infectious music and dancing, dynamic puppetry and a liberating cultural bicycle ride through the city of Santa Monica. On Sunday, August 19th, C.I.C.L.E. (Cyclists Inciting Change Thru LIVE Exchange) will lead an exciting and inspiring bicycle tour through Santa Monica as the streets provide a canvass of art and open space. The 8.5 mile, family-friendly ride, led by experienced and supportive ride leaders, will proceed at a moderate social pace and obey all traffic laws.
The festival and check-in for the ride will be held from 12-2pm and will include current exhibition tours through SMMoA, an Art Reflector Workshop, Bike Advocacy and Safe Riding Tips Workshops, Bike Tune-Ups, Bicycle Rentals and a display of innovative and original bikes.
The Cultural Bike Tour will ride out at 2pm and make two stops along the way. The ride’s first stop will be at Santa Monica Bay Women’s Club with Old-time string trio Triple Chicken Foot with high energy square dancing, refreshments and drinks. The ride will continue on to John Adams Middle School Auditorium for The Matchbox Puppet Show by legendary raconteur Laura Heit. Finally, the ride will pedal back to SMMoA at the Bergamot Station Arts Center for the Popwagon’s mobile art and theater performance.
Other innovative elements on wheels riding through the event will include Carole Frances Lung’s Collaborative Bicycle Powered Sewing Machine, the Peddler’s Creamery Ice Cream Bike, iZip hybrid electric bikes, the Beach Barcycle, and many more!
Events take place between noon and 6pm. The ride’s start/end point will be at Santa Monica Museum of Art (2525 Michigan Avenue, Santa Monica, CA). All you need to do is bring your bicycle (in good working order).This event is FREE and open to everyone, but all participants should be able to ride a bike safely with the ability to brake, change gears, and balance while stopping and starting. All participants under 18 must wear a helmet and be escorted by a parent or guardian. Children under age 8 should be on a tag-a-long, bike trailer, tandem, or other safe child-carrying device to participate in the ride.
