(Ed. Note: We’ve added another map to our Map Page – this one contains all of the BPIT “Top 10” projects in one place!)
On March 1st 1936, the Hoover Dam was completed on the Colorado River, becoming one of the largest public works ever built. On March 1st 2011, the LA City Council will be asked to adopt the draft LA Bike Plan into the Transportation Element of the City’s General Plan. No less momentous an occasion! … kinda.
The City Council convenes at 9:30 in the morning and a number of other bike-related meetings are scheduled afterward throughout the day. If you so desire, you could keep yourself busy all day Tuesday with various bike meetings. We’ve already got our scheduled fully blocked out.
City Council Meeting Tuesday Morning
The City Council hearing is the last step in a 2+ year-long process to create a new vision for bicycling’s future in Los Angeles. First reported by the LACBC on their twitter feed, the bike plan comes before City Council tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM at City Hall in Council Chambers.
While we highly recommend attendance for any bicyclist who is able, you can watch the proceedings on your computer if you cannot make it downtown. You can also follow the twitter feed of Assistant Coordinator Christopher Kidd (@BikeBlogChris), who will be live-tweeting the hearing. There are also sure to be many other bike community people tweeting the meeting with the hashtags #labikeplan or #bikela.
As reported by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA, the LACBC is also planning a celebratory press conference for Wednesday morning on the steps of City Hall. The rally will be more than just a redundant celebration, however, as Mayor Villaraigosa will be on hand to officially sign the newly adopted bike plan at the rally.
BPIT Meeting Tuesday Afternoon
After the City Council hearing on the Bike Plan, make sure to stick around City Hall if you can. As reported last week by LADOT Bike Blog, the Bike Plan Implementation Team (BPIT) is meeting at 2:00 PM in City Hall Room 721 for their second ever meeting. Here’s the agenda. The meeting is 100% open to the public and helps to determine the future of bicycling in Los Angeles.
The BPIT meetings have been getting coverage by Streetsblog, by Orange 20, and by Flying Pigeon. If you can’t make it down to the meeting yourself, you can always sign up for the webinar webcast of the meeting. While the speaker will be on mute (meaning you’ll only be able to listen in), you will be able to submit written questions and suggestions online.
CicLAvia Meeting Tuesday Evening
If you aren’t all biked-out by the end of the BPIT meeting, you can always wheel over to Boyle Heights for a CicLAvia community meeting at 5:30. The meeting will focus on identifying potential CicLAvia routes to expand further into Boyle Heights later this year and in the years ahead.
