The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) Bicycle Program is currently seeking volunteer interns. The LADOT Bicycle Program combines Bikeways Engineering with Bicycle Outreach and Planning to meet the growing public need for bicycle infrastructure and programming. This internship is an exciting opportunity to be involved with the implementation of the newly adopted 2010 Los Angeles Bicycle Plan. In addition to being an active bicyclist, the ideal candidate will be a first year graduate planning student. As there is more than one internship opportunity, interns can play to their strengths by focusing on certain projects within Bicycle Outreach and Planning. Although this will be a volunteer internship, there will be opportunities for paid internships in the future. More details below the fold.
Duties can include:
- Craft and report Bike Program stories to the public via our blog
- Identify and mark locations for bicycle parking in the field
- Maintain existing and create new databases, including syncing databases to maps
- Write grant applications and maintain a spreadsheet on upcoming funding opportunities
- Maximize public outreach efforts by creating maps and images for public events and attending various events to connect with the public
- Organize volunteer groups to inventory bicycle racks in the field
- Create GIS maps to guide the prioritization of future bicycle facilities
Candidate requirements include:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, transcripts may be requested
- Pronounced interest in bicycling
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and professional demeanor
- Strong interpersonal skills and judgment
- Able to lead and complete a project successfully with little supervision
Interested students should send a resume and cover letter to Nate Baird at nate.baird@lacity.org before Thanksgiving. We’ll be looking to schedule interviews as soon as possible. Internships would begin in January.
